Lake George Village Carousel

Lake George Village Carousel Comes To Town ... At Beach Road and Canada Streets ... A Rare Attraction!

Lake George Hotels on Lake George areconveniently located to Lake George Village, and this year, April, 2012, at the corner of Lake George Village Canada Street and Beach Road, there's a shiny colorful new carousel with hundreds of lights, horses, chariots and twirling chairs ... Just as it should be and what we all remembered!  What a wonderful surprise to visitors to Lake george, New York hotels!

Carousels, or as they'rer known:  'Merry-Go-Rounds," are traditional amusement rides comprising wooden animals, such as horses, farm yard animals, exotic animals, coaches, and even mythological creatures, on poles and accompanied by festive circus music at it twirls round and round.

Carousels are a wondrous delight for all ages, and now there's one in Lake George Village! And if that's not enough traditional amusement fun, right next to the carousel you'll find "bumper cars and bumper boats!"  The new (old) Lake George Carousel is an authentic Venetian Carousel built by Bertazzon of Italy, originally installed in the Macon Mall, Georgia, Amish workers built the gazebo used to house the carousel, and now its new home is here at Lake George, NY.

While the term "Carousel" is French, derived from Italian, carousels appear to date back as far as 500 AD to Byzantine times.  Ironically, as the carousel developed through time, it may have been a battle training device.  Perhaps we've all seen jousting on television where the trainer avoids being hit by the other end of the 'carousel?'

The Lake George Village Carousel is a beautiful and celebrated spectacle for children of all ages (and adults too)!  While on vacation here at Lake George Village, New York, be sure to take the family and children to the heart of Lake George Village to ride the fancy new carousel!  If it's not that pot of gold at the end of a Lake George rainbow, or it's a new house on the lake, it's certainly the better ...  "Brass Ring!"

Lake George Village Old Stone Structure 1800's

Posted by  www.LakeGeorgeHotels.com   - "Not Just Hotels."
March 3, 2012

Lake George Village, formerly Caldwell, New York, named for town father James Caldwell, enjoys a long history of turn of the century architecture, including this historic early 1800's stone structure located on Canada Street, only feet from the Lake george Village public lakeside promenade and walkway.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-1QdioTAOE&context=C31e50b6ADOEgsToPDskLU_o_wE4LjimNfOct16HcI

Juxtaposed to this beautiful old stone structure, you will find the contemporary architecture of the Lake George Village United State Post Office where inside this new structure you will note a classic painted mural that features a panoramic view of Lake George, NY (ca. WWII.)

Just north along Canada Street at the far end of Lake George Village's Shepard Park, you will find another classic 19th century brick and stone structure, once home to the Warren County courthouse, with its classic architecture and clock tower, and former local county jail; the building now serves as the home of the Lake George Historical Association and Lake George Arts Project.  Just outside this antique structure, you will find the new Village amphitheater home to the Lake George Jazz Festival, Lake George Music Festival, and a host of family festivals ranging from arts and crafts shows to the Lake George Fire Department's Family Fun Festival.

Below these historic sites lie the remains of earlier structures and historic archeological artifacts and many early earthenware bricks purported to have been used as ballast for early ships.

Housed in the Lake George Historical Association collection, you will discover a small wooden hand made gargoyle-type face attached to a rod known as  "George the Lake George Monster!"  This iconic piece of Lake george folklore (ca.1904) created quite a stir as rumors of a Lake George, New York  "lake sea monster monster-mania" caused visitors and spectators to sail on Lake George steamships searching for a glimpse of George the Sea Monster.  The creator of George, Mr. Harry Watrous, devised a mechanical method to timely raise and lower George from the sub surface of the waters of Lake George to be seen by boating spectators, and then not. One siting of George by a passenger on a Lake George passenger boat caused such a stir that the boat nearly capsized from the ruse.  This near tragic event led to Mr. Watrous's exposure as the perpetrator of the hoax. George may be seen on view daily at the Lake George Historical Association ... A must see!

The Lake George Dinner Theatre is proud to celebrate its 45th consecutive season, and has secured the performance rights to Norm Foster's hilarious comedy "The Love List!"  The Love List is described by Terry Rabine, Artistic Director of the Lake George Dinner Theatre, as a "side-splitting new comedy, where the main characters Leon and Bill concoct a list of what they consider to be the best qualities in a female companion.  When their 'ideal woman' suddenly arrives at Bill's door, the men quickly learn that the old adage 'be careful what you wish for' is especially true when it comes to affairs of the heart.

The Lake George Dinner Theatre was established in 1968 by David Eastwood, a Glens Falls businessman and theatre lover, and his wife, Vicky, who produced Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park in a Glens Falls, New York venue. That production was soon to be the impetus of the Lake george Dinner Theatre, proudly held each season at the newly renovated Lake George Holiday Inn Resort, Lake George Village, New York.

Mr. Rabine, an actor, director and producer, sought to bring "new and contemporary plays" to dinner theatre. The Lake George Dinner Theatre offers productions between July and October, with luncheon matinees every tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and select Saturdays, with seating at 11:15AM, curtain at 1:00PM, and dinner shows every Wednesday through Saturday night, seating at 6:30PM, curtain at 8:00PM.

50th Year - Lake George Winter Carnival

February 9, 2012

Lake George Winter Carnival in its 50th year.  Records support the official advent of the Lake George Winter Carnival as being 1961, however, any  carnival's beginning is speculative.  Visitors ask "Does the lake freeze?" - You bet... 'Solid!"  So solid, in fact, so solid, and so thick, it's not unusual to see a vehicle driving along the lake mid-winter, and, at the bottom of Lake George, there are old rusty cars and truck from years past to attest vehicular lake traffic, no matter how safety uncertain!

Years ago, Lake George winters were referred to as "cannon ball season."  Maybe because historic Fort William Henry, now a Lake George hotel and motel and conference center, and beautifully restored historic Lake George attraction, or rumored to be based on folklore speak that there were so dew at Lake George during winters, one could literally fire a cannon ball down the main street, now referred to and named Canada Street, and not hit a single soul!

Whatever the folklore and coin of the term, the Lake George Winter Carnival is a great winter event attractions visitors to Lake George, New York, and locals to enjoy attractions and activities associated  with winter fun and Lake George Village.  Lake George, New York slows after Labor Day, speeding towards Adirondack fall foliage season, events held at the Adirondack Brew Pub such as Lake George Oktoberfest, the World's Largest Garage Sale, and Adirondack National's Car Show, held the weekend after Labor Day every year.

Then, fall exits, winter arrives, and the Lake George Winter Carnival enters and displays spectacular family events as Lake George Village hotels and motels businesses open their doors to winter visitors and spectators.

In about 1900-1920, Lake George harness races and other winter activities peaked interest, followed by the popularity of skiing and other ice related winter sports and activities, and the unofficial Lake George Winter Carnival was born.  In the early 1960's the Lake George Chamber of Commerce began to organize and manage Lake George winter events, and the official Lake George Winter Carnival registered as a travel-tourism destination event!

By day, visitors enjoy winter activities and events, at night, the Village supports and displays beautiful fireworks that compliment the carnival and remind spectators of the historic cannon bursts that formed American recorded history.

The Lake George Winter Carnival is held every weekend in February, and February, 2012 has been and remains an unseasonably warm Lake George winter month, today being the 9th, and temperatures in the near 40*'s, causes the minimal ice that forms at night in Lake George Village to melt.  The Lake George Winter Carnival has an alternate location in Lake George Village in Shepards Park, where snow has been trucked in, and the Ice Castle is covered during the day to prevent its melting.

Still ... the show must go on, and The Lake George Winter Carnival resumes this Saturday, February 11th and Sunday, February 12th, 2012 in Lake George Village with Polar Bear swims, cook-offs, races, children's activities, a bonfire on the beach (how cool!), evening fireworks, and more!

Enjoy the 2012 Lake George Winter Carnival, and Lake George hotels and motels, resturants, attractions and activities!

Lake George Hotels and Lake George Geological History

February 8, 2012
Today's Morning Temperature - 12* - Sunny

Lake George, New York was formed by the great glaciers of the Ice Age, when it separated and receded, it causing two deep cuts to the earth, and the were joined though glacial pressure to create a north and south basin.  This geological feature can be seen topographically as the southern basin, Lake George Village, Diamond Point, New York, Bolton Landing, New York, and Great Northwest Bay, touch the Tongue Mountain Range.  To the east of Northwest Bay, are the Lake George Narrows Islands, a narrow passage through which the glacier cut the joint to connect the north and south basins to create Lake George, New York's 32 mile lake length with is nearly 205 feet deep, 3+ miles wide, and surrounding mountains, Black Mountain, nearly 2,665 feet above sea level.

Lake George, New York has a long history of inhabitation, and conflict who would control this natural geological wonder froth with resources.

Later in its history, after discovery by Jesuit priests, and its possession under English rule, Lake George played a significant role in our American Revolution, after which, on July 4th, 1776, the lake bed became "sovereign land" forever to be land that is possessed and controlled by the State of New York and declared a public park for the public-interest to hold and enjoy and enjoy its natural pristine beauty in perpetuity for generations.  The Adirondack State Park of New York State grew through the years to nearly 6 million acres, which comprises land area greater than all national parks combined.  Lake George, New York is situated within the great New York State Adirondack Park Preserve, over the Lake George Park Commission, an environmental protection agency charges with its preservation for generations.

After the great heros and general of the American Revolutionary War we awarded for their services vast lake front tracts of land, it was found that this rugged, mountainous area, was unsuitable for agricultural purposes.  The great Adirondacks were a challenging location to sustain and earn a living.

In about the early 1800's, tourism came to the Adirondacks, and the Lake George region.  Artists would visit to paint Hudson River style paintings, Lake George hotels and motels were built, Lake George scenic cruise ships we built and offered visitors transportation to points north, and to enjoy the scenic wonders of Lake george, and the American elite build great American homes employing Adirondack-style architecture and furnishings.

As America's population learned of Lake George's beauty and its surrounding Adirondack area, it became common for more visitors to flock to Lake George as a New York State tourism destination, not only to see and enjoy this beautiful natural wonder, but also as prescribed by doctors to individuals ailing from respiratory afflictions such as whooping cough, to escape early air pollution associated with urban residence.  Lake George offered much more than clean air and crystal clear waters, it provided unsurpassed natural beauty and serenity offering visitors a calming effect they had never experienced in cities in American and countries from which they emigrated.

Soon, more visitors flocked to the Lake George Adirondack area, and Lake Geogre hotels and motels began to sprout up along its beautiful shoreline, bringing Lake George, New York into the modern era of tourism that it enjoys today!
